Cargo from Semarang: Shipping Through Tanjung Emas Port

Central Java makes a large share of what Indonesia sends abroad. Furniture from Jepara, garments and textiles from the industrial belt around Semarang, and handicraft from Solo and Yogyakarta all need a way out, and for most of it that way is Tanjung Emas, the main port of Semarang. Shipping through it, rather than trucking everything to Jakarta first, is often the faster and cheaper choice. This guide covers how it works and what to prepare.

Why ship through Semarang instead of Jakarta

Tanjung Priok in Jakarta is the biggest port in the country, and for some destinations it still offers more direct sailings. But for a factory in Central Java, trucking a container to Jakarta adds a long road journey, extra cost and one more point where the schedule can slip. Tanjung Emas sits close to the producers, so the container is loaded, cleared and on the quay in far less time.

  • Shorter trucking. Most factories in Semarang, Kendal, Demak and Jepara are a few hours from the port, not a full day.
  • Fewer handovers. Pickup, export clearance and loading can be handled by one team in one city.
  • Regular connections. Feeder vessels link Tanjung Emas with the main transhipment hubs, so cargo reaches the long haul routes without detouring by road.

What usually ships from Tanjung Emas

The port handles full containers and consolidated cargo. Typical exports are wooden and rattan furniture, garments, textiles, processed food and handicraft. Imports include machinery, raw materials for factories and consumer goods for the Central Java market.

If your shipment does not fill a container, consolidation is the usual answer. Several shippers share one box and each pays for the space they use. We explained when that is worth it in LCL or FCL, which one is actually cheaper.

Documents for exporting through Semarang

The paperwork is the same as at any Indonesian port. What changes is who prepares it and how close they are to the cargo.

  • Commercial invoice and packing list, with matching weights and package counts.
  • The export declaration, filed electronically before the cut off.
  • Certificate of origin, if your buyer wants to claim lower duty under a trade agreement.
  • Timber legality documents for wooden products, plus fumigation or heat treatment certificates for wooden packaging.
  • The bill of lading, issued once the cargo is loaded.

If this is your first export, our step by step export guide walks through each document in more detail, and the Incoterms guide explains which costs belong to you and which to your buyer.

Timing a shipment out of Tanjung Emas

Work backwards from the vessel. Book the space first, then schedule the container to arrive at your factory with enough time to load it properly, usually a day before it must return to the port. The export declaration and documents must be complete before the container cut off, normally two to three days before sailing. In peak season, from October to January, book three to four weeks ahead rather than two.

Domestic cargo from Central Java

Not everything goes overseas. Goods from Semarang also move to Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali and the eastern islands by sea, and to the rest of Java by truck. Domestic shipments are priced per kilogram or per cubic meter with a minimum charge, and the destination often matters more than the distance.
