Shipping Handicraft and Furniture from Yogyakarta: A Practical Guide

Yogyakarta is one of the craft capitals of Indonesia. Silver from Kotagede, leather, batik, wooden carvings, rattan and teak furniture from the villages around the city all find buyers abroad. But Yogyakarta has no major container port, and that shapes how its goods travel. This guide explains the route, the documents and the packing that get handicraft and furniture from a workshop in Yogyakarta to a customer overseas.

How goods leave Yogyakarta

Most sea cargo from Yogyakarta is collected from the workshop and trucked to Tanjung Emas in Semarang, a few hours to the north, or sometimes to Tanjung Perak in Surabaya. From there it sails on feeder vessels to the main transhipment hubs. Small, light or urgent shipments fly instead, through Yogyakarta International Airport or via Jakarta.

For a workshop, this means the shipment starts with a road journey. Booking pickup, packing and trucking together with the freight keeps the schedule in one plan.

Consolidation for small orders

Many craft exporters ship a few cartons at a time, not a full container. Consolidation lets several small orders share one container, with each paying only for the space it uses. It is the most common way small Yogyakarta businesses reach buyers in Europe, Australia and the United States. The trade off is time, because the container leaves only when it is full or on a fixed weekly schedule. We compared both options in LCL or FCL, which one is actually cheaper.

Packing handicraft and furniture

  • Wrap each piece separately. Pieces that touch rub and chip during the journey.
  • Fill every gap. Cartons that shift when you shake them will shift at sea.
  • Crate heavy or fragile items. Furniture and large carvings need a wooden crate or a strong frame, not just cardboard.
  • Watch the moisture. Wood and rattan can grow mould in a hot container. Make sure goods are dry before packing and add desiccants for long voyages.
  • Label every carton on every side. Printed and numbered, for example 3 of 12.

Documents for wooden and natural products

Handicraft exports use the standard set of invoice, packing list, export declaration and bill of lading. Wooden and natural products often need more:

  • Timber legality documents under Indonesia’s SVLK system for many wood products.
  • Fumigation or heat treatment certificates, and ISPM 15 marking on wooden pallets and crates.
  • Phytosanitary certificates for some plant based materials, depending on the destination.
  • A certificate of origin, if your buyer can use it to lower import duty.

Australia and New Zealand are particularly strict about wood, bark, seeds and soil. We covered the lane specific rules in our guide to shipping to Australia, the US and Europe.

Furniture needs extra planning

Furniture is bulky, so it is charged on volume rather than weight, and good packing makes a real difference to the price. Knock down designs, nesting and careful loading can fit far more pieces into the same container. Our article on shipping furniture from Bali goes through costs and timing, and almost all of it applies to Yogyakarta too.

Common mistakes we see

  • Packing before the buyer confirms the final quantity, then repacking everything.
  • Forgetting the fumigation certificate for wooden packaging.
  • Declaring a value that does not match the invoice the buyer receives.
  • Using the wrong HS code, which changes the duty your buyer pays.
