Bali is not only a destination, it is a production island. Furniture workshops in Gianyar, textile studios in Denpasar, and craft makers across Ubud send goods to buyers all over the world every week. If you are preparing your first shipment out of Bali, here is how the process actually works.
Start with what you are sending
Before anyone can price your shipment, three things need to be clear: what the goods are, how much space they take once packed, and where they need to arrive. Measure the packed cargo, not the bare product, because the crate is what occupies space on the vessel.
Volume is measured in cubic meters, or CBM. Multiply length by width by height in meters. A crate that is 1.2 by 0.8 by 1 meter is 0.96 CBM. Add every piece together for your total.
Choose between sharing a container and taking a whole one
If your cargo fills less than roughly half a container, sharing one is almost always cheaper. This is called LCL, or less than container load, and you only pay for the cubic meters you actually use. Once your volume grows, renting a full container becomes better value and also means your goods travel alone.
Sea or air
Sea freight is priced by volume and takes weeks. Air freight is priced by weight and lands in days. The practical rule: urgent and light goes by air, bulky and patient goes by sea. Most furniture and craft shipments from Bali go by sea for cost reasons.
Packing is not the place to save money
Cargo leaving Bali is lifted, stacked and moved a dozen times before it reaches a buyer. Export grade wooden crates, corner protection and proper wrapping are the cheapest insurance you will buy. A damaged piece costs far more than the crate that would have prevented it.
The documents you will need
- Commercial invoice and packing list, describing what the goods are, what they are worth, and how they are packed.
- Transport document, which is a bill of lading for sea freight or an air waybill for air freight.
- Certificate of origin, which proves where the goods were made and often reduces the import duty your buyer pays.
Every number has to match across all three. One inconsistent weight or value can hold an entire shipment at the port.
Realistic timelines
Between major Indonesian islands, expect two to seven days including port handling. To nearby Asian ports, five to ten days. Australia takes around two weeks, while Europe and North America are closer to five. Book before the vessel cut off, which closes two to three days before the ship sails.
