East Java Multipurpose Terminal (EJMT) has welcomed its first container call in East Java. This milestone marks a significant step in its operations at the new deep-water facility and shows its capability to handle different kinds of vessels. Strategically situated 60 kilometers northwest of Surabaya in Lamongan Regency, EJMT is located along the Java Sea, outside the Surabaya Channel.
EJMT is operated by the International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) which is ending a banner year on a high note, as its new multipurpose terminal started receiving container ships on 14 December. ICTSI is one of the largest port operators in the world – in the range of 50,000 to 3.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) per year – through projects in six continents.
Glass maker XinYi Glass was responsible for the inaugural call, picking EJMT to handle cargo bound for its newly established factory in Gresik. “We would like to extend our gratitude to XinYi Glass and their management for entrusting EJMT to handle their first vessel call in Indonesia,” said Patrick Chan, EJMT’s Chief Executive Officer.
“Having successfully managed our first container operation alongside multiple project vessels, we have demonstrated our capability as a fully multipurpose terminal equipped to handle all types of cargo. We are ready to support East Java.”
In 2022, ICTSI acquired majority ownership in PT East Java Development, the operator of EJMT, for $46.5 million, marking its entry into Indonesian territory. The new gateway is accessible for vessels entering East Java and was constructed to support the economies of Lamongan, Tuban and Central Java by handling containerized, breakbulk and project cargo.
The Terminal is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including two Konecranes Gottwald ESP.8 mobile harbor cranes—the largest port equipment in any East Java port. For bulk cargo operations, the terminal utilizes four grabs with capacities of 30 and 12 cubic meters, as well as two automated 60-cubic-meter anti-dust hoppers for bulk cargo.
Additionally, EJMT’s equipment fleet includes two Kalmar reach stackers, an empty container handler, three automated Stinis spreaders, four Terberg tractors, and five Tantri trailers.
As the international gateway to East Java, EJMT is poised to serve both domestic and international markets, supporting hinterland customers with reliable and comprehensive port services.
