Qatar Airways Inaugural Flight to Medan

17 January 2024

Qatar Airways’ inaugural flight from Doha to Medan touched down at Kualanamu International Airport on Monday, 15 January 2024, making Medan the airline’s third destination in the Republic of Indonesia. The new direct service will complement the airline’s over 40 weekly flights to Jakarta and Bali. It connects Medan to Qatar’s hub, Hamad International Airport.

High-ranking officials were onboard the inaugural flight, QR966, and they were welcomed at Kualanamu International Airport by water cannon salute and local government dignitaries.

President Director for PT Angkasa Pura 2, Mr. Achmad Rifai, said: “The opening of the Doha – Medan route today is a proud moment for Kualanamu International Airport. We are delighted that Qatar Airways, one of the best airlines in the world, has chosen Medan to expand its footprint. Travellers from North Sumatra now have a direct route to the world via Qatar Airways’ hub in Doha. This route will greatly facilitate global connections and create new opportunities for international air freight transport from Medan as well.”

The city of Medan is the capital and largest city of the Indonesian province of North Sumatra. It is a thriving economic hub and commercial centre of the region. Its airport is called Kualanamu International Airport.

The service is to be operated by the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
Cargo specifications for this aircraft are:
136.7 m3 (4,826 cu ft) 28 × LD3 or 9x (88×125) pallets.

Cargo is generally carried by passenger aircraft in and out of Kualanamu, without dedicated cargo flights during normal operations. A cargo apron is available which can accommodate three wide-bodied aircraft and airfreight storage is located 1.5 km from passenger terminal apron side.
