New Jakarta-Shenzhen Air Cargo Route

Central Airlines has begun operating a new cargo route between south China’s metropolis of Shenzhen and Jakarta. The service is operated six times a week, with a weekly transportation capacity in excess of 120 tonnes.

The type of aircraft to be permanently employed on the route is pending confirmation, however, cargo carrier Central Airlines currently has a fleet of Boeing 737F freighters and it is expected they will utilise these, rather than their B777F.

Freight imported into to Shenzhen will mainly consist of seafood from Southeast Asia, as well as tropical fruits like durians and bananas. Export cargo out of China will primarily be e-commerce goods, such as electronic products and clothes.

China is Indonesia’s biggest trade partner and largest export market, while China relies on Southeast Asia’s largest economy for mineral resources and sees it as a key partner in the Belt and Road Initiative, its globe-spanning trade and infrastructure project. In 2022, trade between the two countries increased by nearly 20% from the previous year.

Trade between China and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is expected to increase further with the launch of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement, the world’s biggest free trade pact.

Shenzhen now handles nearly 100 cargo flights to and from ASEAN countries each week. The intention is to promote trade between the wider region surrounding Shenzhen – which incorporates the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area – and other members of ASEAN and RCEP.
